The Dream Act

I ALMOST FORGOT TO POST ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY.

THE DREAM ACT PASSED IN THE HOUSE.

The senate seems less likely to pass it, but it sounds like the vote is being delayed so that the senate can vote on tax cuts.  One of the main reasons why the republicans and democrats say they won’t pass the Dream Act is because they need to take care of Americans first.  If they even knew how many Americans the Dream Act affected, they wouldn’t see it that way.  Just because someone wasn’t born here, doesn’t mean they aren’t from here.  I’ve only lived in Long Beach for a year and a half, but it already feels so much like home.  Can you even imagine living somewhere almost your whole live and being told that it couldn’t be your home?

For those of you who don’t know, the Dream Act (or Development, Relief for Alien Minors Act)  is a bill that would give undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship if they are in the military or college for 2 years.  They have to live in the U.S. before the age of 18 and be between the ages of 12 to 30 when the bill is passed.  They have graduate from an American high school and be in good moral standing.  It was first introduced to congress in 2001 and the battle to raise awareness for this cause has been going on ever since.  Last year, I attended the annual May 1st Immigrant rights march and rally in L.A.  There were so many Dreamers there.  It was a seriously live-changing event.  These sorts of things are going on CONSTANTLY all over the United States.  It’s kind of amazing how many people are getting out there and how many allies are standing up for those that have something to lose by speaking out for their rights.  The amount of events and activities are overwhelming, especially right now with the Dream Act being considered in the congress.  I just hope the rest of you will support the cause as well.  Don’t be afraid, call your senators!  It takes 2 minutes of your time and you could be helping to change the lives of soooo many people!  check out www.dreamactivist.org to get more information on the dream act and about calling.  They even give you script!
